METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete depends on how long the gum has been there and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left not long ago and it has not penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping the gum off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a more forgiving substance compared to a gooey and stringy glob. Once the gum is frozen, we slide a putty knife or scraper right under the gum residue. Then we slide the scraper slowly beneath the gum and the whole piece should then peel right off the concrete.

The above method is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that has turned black, or is already smashed deep down into the concrete, we use a hot water power washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we won’t use very high pressure because that will sometimes damage the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses more pressure than necessary to clean commercial concrete surfaces. These types of surfaces can be damaged a lot easier than people think, especially if they’re only 1-2 years old. Concrete can take up to 100 years to cure.
